Cape Cod: Had some of the best pure stuff on the Chatham staff, with a 92-95 fastball that bumped 96. His hard 12/6 curve at 80-82 is a power breaker with depth, plus potential (2400 rpm), very good as freeze/drop-in offering, tunnels with his fastball. He also flashed a changeup at 84, but the fastball and curve are his bread and butter. A 6-foot-5, 213-pounder with a tapered waist and a very broad frame through the chest and shoulders, Johnson has a high three-quarters release, with tilted shoulders to get extra angle. His control is below-average, and he lost his release on the breaking ball during a two-inning, three-walk performance we saw. He features swing-and-miss stuff but too many free passes and lacks deception at this stage.
10/20/18
Uncommitted. 6-foot-3, 190-pound right-handed pitcher, physical, projectable frame, still growing into. Arm works long with some stabbing on the back-side, accelerates quickly out to a ¾ slot. Drop and drive delivery, lands towards third with toe-closed, pivots foot full open, finishes crossing over. Fastball worked up to 89. Sloped shoulder frame and a quick arm, he has present tools with a lot of upside and will be a high uncommitted underclass follow.
