Alberta Scout Blog: May's Standouts

Our staff was all over the province this past month getting a look at players in-game following a long offseason of indoor training and our winter showcase circuit. After a showcase season in which we saw hundreds of players, we were eager to get outdoors and see how those players and their tools perform in a game situation.
After being on hand for numerous games throughout the month of May, we breakdown standout players from the first month of the season. The list includes one of the top 2026s in the country, a top bat in Alberta's 2024 class, and more.

Easton Kitura 2B / OF / Vauxhall High School, AB / 2026Throughout the spring, and continuing through May, Kitura was not only one of the top hitters on a talented Vauxhall team, but in the entire province. The 6-foot-0, 175-pound 2026 was one of the best players at the annual Vauxhall tournament. He had multiple hits in several games, including a grandslam and numerous extra base hits. He started off the month making a name for himself at the Best of the West against some of the top arms in the country. The athletic LHH can also play all over the field at a high level. Come August 1st, when the recruiting window opens for 2026s, Kitura will be one of the most sought after players in Canada.

Chase Hembling 1B / 3B / Parkland Twins Academy, AB / 2025Hembling’s physicality at the plate was evident at the Don Plotsky Memorial Tournament last weekend in Sherwood Park. The 2026 stands at 6-0, 210-pounds and looks to do damage every time he steps to the plate. The LHH had a hard hit double to the wall in right on friday, and followed that up with a triple to the left-center-field gap in his next at bat. He showed the ability to drive the ball with authority to all fields. Hembling has been one of the top hitters in AAA so far, and will look to continue on that path as the season continues.

Dylan Richmond SS / 2B / St Francis, AB / 2025The uncommitted 2025 was a mainstay at the top of the lineup for the Calgary Premier Blues all weekend at the Don Plotsky Memorial Tournament. The athletic SS showed present bat-to-ball with gap-to-gap power, driving multiple balls for extra bases to different parts of the field. He moves well on the infield and utilizes his athleticism to make difficult plays look easy. At 5-foot-11, 175-pounds, Richmond has the tools to take that next step and be an impact player at the next level.

Landon Kauffman OF / LHP / Okotoks Dawgs Academy, AB / 2024Rankings StateRank: 17 / POS: 3
No matter where Kauffman steps on the field, he hits. He started off the month at the Best of the West as one of the top hitters on the Okotoks Dawgs who went on to win the tournament. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound RHH utilizes a short swing path and bat speed to drive the ball to all fields with authority. The Portland commit and 2023 Future Gamer, who is now playing in the WCBL with the Okotoks Dawgs, will look to carry his momentum into that league against college arms.

Josh Mills LHP / 1B / Leduc junior high, AB / 2027Rankings StateRank: 5 / POS: 1
Mills jumped onto the scene in April when we saw him at the Evolution Baseball Scout Day, and that success continued into the month of May. At 6-foot-1, 165-pounds, Mills runs his fastball up to 84 mph from the left side and showed the ability to do damage at the dish as well. At the Bantam Best of the West in early May, Mills was a standout on both sides of the ball showing his abilities as a two-way player during game action against some of the best competition in the county at that level. The 2027 is one of the top players in the province and he’ll be someone to keep tabs on while both on the mound and at the dish.
